It was back to the sewing machine…

Ooh I couldn’t resist playing around with those small bags in my last post…

This time I used black duck canvas from Hancock’s, lined it with more stain free curtain lining, made a full length back pocket, and 2 side gusset pockets. Thinking about the possibility of selling it to girls in marching band, this time I chose to decorate it with a flag and ribbon for the girls in colour guard.

Ok, I preferred this version in the canvas to the Kona cotton version. I think it would be more robust and durable during a marching band season.  It was the same bag design, but this time I used premade strapping but kept to a snap/popper fastening.

BUT, I couldn’t leave it there. Sitting around the coffee table planning the meals for the leadership retreat one of the mums said oh but it would be nice to have a “mum” ok, a “mom” bag because I always have to carry stuff for my other daughter!

So when I bought the black duck canvas I brought this stunning red, bear in mind school colours are red, black and white! And came up with this …

Disappointment!!! Why? I loved the red bag and was inspired to make a band of pockets around the bag (I’ve got a bag like it and love all the pockets) – they didn’t work! 5” deep pockets, are not deep enough, white under thread peeped through no matter how I adjusted the tension and by the time I’d finished I hated it. The bag size was great – approx 13” deep x 14 inches wide.

Hey, I wouldn’t let that get me down. After talking with my friend Anne over coffee (post crack of dawn summer school drop off- no kidding 7.20 am) I came up with a single patch pocket on the front of the bag!

Yeah, I love this one. Black duck canvas, curtain lining for the inside of the bag and yes, you can just see the 2” in ring around the edge of matching music fabric. And I sewed in some ribbon for a key fob soto prevent keys buring themselves at the bottom of the bag! (oops, I sorted out that stray red thread on the pocket)

Not satisfied, I made a red bag with a front pocket.

Love this one as well.

Then I decided I couldn’t stand the prototype and unpicked that offending black band and remade the pocket.IMG_20110701_142707

So much better. Yes, you did spot the Americana fabric lining. When I was moving all the fabric boxes upstairs to the studio cupboard, I discovered more Americana fabric than I would ever need for a quilt, its the 4th July weekend so I lined my bag with it!

And the upshot…Yes I would make bags to order for REVHS Marching Band Mum’s and girls. Just email me….

Oh and dare I say this, Anne’s daughter attends  Redlands High School and I had an idea for a pressie for her!
